We have already paid so much carbon in the atmosphere that today, reducing emissions is not enough to prevent the effects of climate change. Sequestration must be part of the solution, but we probably cannot plant enough trees. So some people get creative, using circular design principles to create new products from our biggest waste issues. Earth911 editor Mitch Ratcliffe recently spoke to three people whose companies extract carbon from the air and turn it from pollutant to product in a panel titled “Mine the sky: Making consumer goods from captured carbon. Here we take a look at some of the consumer goods that these companies and others make from the captured carbon.

Direct air capture

Direct air capture (DAC) uses chemicals to remove carbon dioxide from the air, essentially concentrating it. There are two types of DAC system; one uses liquid solvents and the other uses solid absorbents (such as a chemical sponge). Once carbon dioxide is captured from the atmosphere, the solution (or sorbent) is usually heated to release carbon to be used and other chemicals for another carbon capture cycle.

The benefit of DAC on climate change depends on two factors: the energy source used in the carbon capture process and the quality of the captured carbon storage. The use of fossil fuel energy in DAC processes reduces its efficiency. The heat used for the DAC must come from waste heat, renewable energy or nuclear energy to significantly reduce atmospheric carbon.

When the captured carbon is used to make consumer products, the shelf life of the product will determine how long the carbon stays out of the atmosphere. Single-use products and consumables (such as fizzy drinks) will quickly release carbon into the atmosphere, while building materials can store carbon for decades.

The first large-scale DAC factory is now under development in the United States, but most of the 19 DAC factories already operating in Europe, the United States and Canada are small and sell the captured carbon for use in business products and processes. More and more companies are collecting carbon from industrial emissions at the source. Indeed, carbon is much more concentrated in industrial chimneys than in the atmosphere.

Concrete

One of the first and most promising consumer applications of captured carbon is concrete. A durable material used in vast quantities, concrete would also be responsible for 4% to 8% of global CO2, half of which comes from production processes. Using captured carbon in concrete can not only help offset the energy costs of concrete production by up to 48%, but it can also reduce the energy cost of carbon capture by skipping the energy-intensive purification step. .

Cleaners

Cleaning products have nothing to do with the life of concrete. But, there is a satisfying balance in cleaning the atmosphere when you are cleaning your home. A new laundry capsule Unilever uses surfactants made with alcohols derived from captured industrial emissions. Although the new laundry detergent is initially only available in China, it could eventually become an option for anyone looking for greener cleaning in their washing machine.

Air Shipping started as a consumer products division of a company that manufactures CO2 enhanced additives for concrete and corrosion resistant coatings. Now they are teaming up with other companies to produce a wide variety of items. Each product incorporates materials made from carbon dioxide emissions and replaces the more carbon intensive materials used in their conventional counterparts. Among them is CleanO2, a range of soaps based on potassium carbonate captured from natural gas heaters.

Household items

Expedition Air partners also manufacture a variety of household items, concrete coasters To pencils. Few of these products are likely to make a significant contribution to carbon sequestration. Instead, they serve as conversation starters. And to that end, few things could be more effective than works of art. Aerial art is a program in which Expedition Air collaborates with artists through a residency program and other partnerships to showcase carbon capture technology. From science-themed t-shirts to colorful landscape paintings, each Air Art piece tells an environmental story. They also use materials that incorporate captured carbon.

Luxury products

At least one company is transforming alcohols made from captured carbon to more luxurious uses than laundry. Airline companyUsing captured industrial carbon to make jet fuel can be ironic. But their products also include pure alcohols which form the basis of a gender-neutral scent, Eau de Parfum Air, with notes of jasmine, fig and tobacco. (Although there are pure essential oil fragrances, almost all commercial perfumes use an alcohol base. Alcohol is one of the least problematic ingredients used in perfumes and colognes.) Air Company also manufactures an 80-proof Vodka.

Perhaps the ultimate luxury item, diamonds are pure carbon. And they are generally among the less ethical jewelry options. Even lab-grown diamonds, which have less environmental and human impact than mined diamonds, have a huge carbon footprint because they are made from methane and require considerable energy to be produced. Ether diamonds improve standard lab-grown diamonds using DAC carbon as a source material and renewable energy to fuel their process. Each carat produced removes 20 metric tons (22 US tons) of CO2 from the atmosphere.

AirCarbone

Manufactured in facilities powered by renewable energies, AirCarbon is a plastic substitute. Using air and carbon dissolved in water, this plastic-like material does not require DAC. Instead, the makers of AirCarbon use a biological process. In a large saltwater reservoir, naturally occurring microorganisms in the ocean form a polyester material called polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). They manufacture the plastic-like material resulting in compostable straws and cutlery under the brand name restore. While single-use products like these have little value for carbon sequestration, replacing them with disposable plastics is still a big win for the oceans.

The cost of carbon capture will decrease as new DAC facilities come on stream and increase the capacity of the technology. As carbon capture increases, the number and type of consumer products containing carbon captured will change. This class of products could move from the novelties to the conversation to one of many strategies to substantially reduce carbon concentrations in the atmosphere.

  • Regular cleaning of rubber or neoprene boots will not only make them look great, but increase their durability and help prevent the boot from cracking.

The great thing about rubber boots is that they get muddy so you don’t, but knowing how to clean rubber boots will not only make them look better, but they’ll also last longer. Whether you own traditional rubber boots or comfy neoprene boots – worn all day and everyday in the yard – or a trendy pair for weekend walks, they are all worth a regular cleaning inside and out. outside.

It is recommended that you rinse your rubber boots daily of any wet mud, horse manure, and agricultural chemicals, but if dirt has become a more permanent feature, you will need to take a more meticulous approach.

How to clean rubber boots: the outside

Start with the outside of the boot, where most of the accumulated mud is.

Either outside or on an old piece of newspaper to protect your floor, brush off all excess dried mud, including that trapped in the tread. You can use a dandy brush or any medium bristle brush.

Dampen a rag in a bowl of lukewarm water and wipe in a downward motion over the entire boot. It is best to start at the top, where there will be the least amount of dirt, so that you don’t end up spreading the mud from the dirtiest areas to the cleanest.

Prepare another bowl of soapy water – using a teaspoon of dish soap in a quart of water – and repeat the wiping process, leaving the soles for later. Solvents and detergents are not recommended. Depending on how muddy the rubber boots are, you may need to use a little elbow grease and a few circular motions to move some of the dirt.

An old toothbrush is ideal for cleaning the tread on the soles. Dip the toothbrush in the soapy water and scrub the steps well.

Finish with a wipe down with clean water and a clean rag to remove any soap residue, as this can leave stains or compromise the exterior.

Sometimes rubber boots develop a white marbled film or powder, known as “bloom.” It is not very attractive, but it does not affect the durability of the boot and generally means that your wellies are made from a good quality natural rubber (particles insoluble in rubber can trace back to the boot. surface at certain temperatures, such as excess heat or sunlight). It’s pretty easy to eradicate – cleaning up as outlined above should do the trick.

Otherwise, there are commercial sprays, such as Hunter rubber stamp or one silicone spray, to restore the boots to their original appearance. This will also keep the rubber soft and in pristine condition.

Some connoisseurs swear by wiping a few drops of olive oil on a rag over the jaded boot, working in small areas from top to bottom. But a word of warning – never apply sprays or oil to the soles, or you could end up sitting in a puddle.

Cleaning the inside of the boot

There’s no point in having clean, sparkling rubber boots if they smell like cheese inside and are breeding grounds for bacteria. Always wear socks to absorb excess moisture.

Mix some non-organic liquid detergent, such as Parsley, in lukewarm water. Soak a cloth in soapy water and wipe down the entire interior. Repeat the process to wipe off the soap scum with plain water.

If the boot still smells, mix equal amounts of hot water with White vinegar, which works as an air freshener, and wipe the inside again. The acids in vinegar can help prevent the growth of bacteria. You can also try shaking three tablespoons of baking soda in the trunk, and let it work its magic overnight. Empty it before using the boot.

In summer, when your boots are resigned in the closet, you can store a lavender or other scented sachet in the boot to keep it smelling fresh.

    Drying your wellington boots

Drying rubber boots properly is key to their durability. Do not be tempted to place them near the radiator, AGM, or under a hair dryer, or leave them outside in freezing temperatures as this may cause the rubber to crack or split. They should be left to dry naturally in a warm, well-ventilated room. You can wrap them with a small towel or roll up newspaper and put balls of it inside the boot to speed up the process and help keep the shape of the boot.

AAn old friend once described his style to me as “like an apple, crisp and fresh”. The description was appropriate for this time in our life (early 20s) and although a decade has passed I still think about it every time I put on a white shirt.

The wardrobe classic looks great when it’s just that: crisp white, crisp and fresh. But keeping it that way isn’t always easy.

The lifespan of the shirt will be in part determined by its composition. Jade Sarita Arnott, creative director of slow fashion brand Arnsdorf, recommends choosing natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, hemp or Tencel. She says, “Avoid synthetic fabrics or synthetic blends as they attract odors and trap bacteria.”

Steve Anderton, a laundry expert with LTC Worldwide Consulting Group, explains that this is because “polyester tends to cling tenaciously to oily contamination. [including skin sebum]”, As well as greasy food stains caused by” dressing, chicken fats and fish oils “.

    Watch out for deodorant

Anderton warns that the chemicals in deodorant stains make them “virtually impossible to remove.” To avoid them, he suggests waiting until your deodorant is completely dry before putting on your shirt.

While not particularly popular in a hot Australian climate, wearing an undershirt will also help absorb sweat before it reaches your shirt.

    Choose the right detergent

Both Sarita Arnott and Anderton suggest keeping white clothes away from all other colors when washing. Sarita Arnott explains that this prevents dyes in other clothes from tinting whites.

An all-white wash will also allow you to choose a specialty detergent that may not be as gentle on other colors. Anderton recommends choosing a higher quality detergent with a suspending agent like sodium silicate salts, so that after the dirt is removed from your shirt in the machine, it stays in the water and out of the fabric for the rest of the wash. This prevents the shirt from turning gray.

He says your detergent should contain an emulsifier, such as citric acid, to solubilize greasy food stains (this will help even stained polyester). A mild oxidizing agent such as sodium perborate will help fade vegetable dye stains from things like coffee, tea, red wine, beets, or grass.

The other thing to watch out for is a detergent that contains enzymes like protease or proteinase, which will digest food and drink stains and perform well in low wash temperatures. If this is all a bit technical, Choice performed lab tests to determine which detergents are the best.

    Pre-treat problem areas

Often times, the collars and cuffs are the first places to turn yellow. Anderton says this is because “grime tends to collect on the fabric which is repeatedly rubbed against the skin during normal wear.”

He suggests pre-treating the collars and cuffs to keep those areas white by following these steps: “Wet them and scrub for a few seconds with a medium-hard natural bristle brush dipped in liquid detergent”.

If this does not work, the fabric may unfortunately have been discolored by skin oils from a previous wash, where they were not removed, “either with the heat of a previous drying, or with ironing, or simply over time ”. To avoid this, Anderton advises to pay “special attention to the pre-treatment of the yellowed areas, otherwise they will not fade.”

If you need to iron, do it while the shirt is still slightly damp and start at the back of the collar. Be careful not to iron the stains, as this may make them impossible to remove in the future. Photograph: Ian Logan / Getty Images

Although sweat and skin oil can be more complicated, he says, “most food and drink brands will rub off very easily, provided they have a cold pre-wash (below 40 ° C). ) to prevent the formation of spots “.

Sarita Arnott recommends targeting the stains by making a paste from baking soda and water, applying the paste directly to the oily stains and leaving it overnight before washing the garment. After this treatment, Sarita Arnott recommends using “a cold or gentle machine wash at 30 ° C”. She says, “You can also add baking soda to your regular wash load to lighten the whites and make them look fresh.”

    Sunlight helps

To dry white shirts, Sarita Arnott suggests hanging them outside in the fresh air because “sunlight can also illuminate whites.”

It should be even more impactful if you’ve used a detergent with an optical brightener, says Anderton. It has to “grab onto the cotton fibers and convert the invisible, ultraviolet part of natural daylight into a brilliant white light” that will make the shirt glow.

    Urgent situations

Sarita Arnott says you can avoid ironing “if you hang the shirt on the line or on a hanger” to dry, as most creases will fall off in the process. But she cautions, “if you’re using a hanger, make sure you use one with light wood or metal or plastic rather than dark wood which can transfer color.”

If you need to iron, Anderton recommends doing it while the shirt is still slightly damp, using an iron on medium heat. Turn it inside out, start with the back of the collar and the yoke on the shoulders, then work your way up to the sleeves and finally work around the body. It says to avoid squeezing hard folds in the sleeves or pleats, to maximize the life of the fabric.
