The term durable goods refers to products that have a high degree of permanence and durability. These are items that people buy once, use for a long time, and don’t need to be replaced frequently. As such, the durable goods market is less volatile than other types of markets, such as the technology sector or even the apparel industry. These companies make products like refrigerators, washing machines, furniture and telephones. Durable goods stocks tend to be much less volatile than other stock classes, as investors are generally less concerned that new patterns will render current versions obsolete. In other words, these companies sell products with a longer life cycle, which is why you won’t see much turnover among household durable goods stocks.

Whirlpool Corp.

Whirlpool Corp. is one of the best known names in the household durable goods industry. In fact, the company makes products in just about every category, including apparel, appliances, and air conditioners. Although Whirlpool is best known for its refrigerators, it also manufactures washers, dryers and water heaters. As an investor, you gain exposure to multiple growth sectors with a single security. In addition to selling high-end appliances, Whirlpool also makes laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and other cleaning products. The company is a blue chip stock that has been in business for over 100 years.

General Electricity Company.

GE is one of the largest and most diversified companies in the world, with several household durable goods subsectors. The Company’s Appliances segment manufactures refrigerators, washers and dryers, while its Lighting segment sells light bulbs and other home lighting products. GE’s Home segment is responsible for GE’s security and smart home offerings, including appliances, alarms and other related technologies. The company also makes fans, which are technically not durable household goods, but they are durable nonetheless! GE’s appliance segment is particularly strong right now, thanks to the company’s acquisition of Electrolux. The deal has been valued at $3.2 billion and will make GE the dominant force in home appliances. GE’s share price has seen volatility since the start of the year, but the company remains a worthy investment in household durable goods.

Frigidaire Co. LLC

Frigidaire is another durable household goods company with products in just about every category. One of the company’s most popular categories is floor care, which includes vacuums, mops and other cleaning products. Frigidaire also sells air conditioners, furnaces, dehumidifiers, water heaters and washing machines. These are some of the best sellers in the business, and Frigidaire has a pretty high market share in each of these categories. Frigidaire is a subsidiary of Whirlpool Corp., so it benefits from the strength of its parent company. In fact, the two companies share R&D and other assets. Frigidaire also has a significant footprint in China, which is an often overlooked market in the household durable goods space.

Samsung

Samsung is a household name, but it also happens to be a household durable stock. The company sells everything from refrigerators to washers and dryers, as well as some appliances, like water heaters. Samsung is particularly strong in the home appliance category, thanks in large part to the company’s acquisition of the GE Appliance brand. This deal was completed in July 2018, giving Samsung a prominent place in the home appliance market. Samsung’s other big brands include Kenmore and Smart Home, which is an emerging brand in smart home technology. Like many other durable household goods stocks, Samsung isn’t cheap, but investors can still buy the stock and benefit from its long-term growth.

Summary

The household durable goods industry is one of the most reliable places to invest, especially given the recent volatility in other sectors. While the tech industry has been largely under the microscope this year, household durable goods companies have not been affected in the same way. These stocks have a long track record of steady growth and have proven time and time again that they can withstand market downturns. If you’re looking for a safe and reliable place to invest your money, household durable goods stocks are a great option.

For those who are fans of the classic Bar Keepers Friend cleaner and polish, this gives the same results, but in a pre-mixed formula for faster cleaning. It works well against rust stains, tarnish, mineral deposits, soap scum, and indoor and outdoor dirt, and is especially effective on the following surfaces: stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper alloys, aluminum, ceramics , porcelain, glass, Corian. Recommended for use in the kitchen (sinks, cookware, cook tops and exteriors, oven door windows, stone free countertops and plates to buff away knife marks), bathroom (sinks, tubs, showers, faucets , toilets, tile and grout. ), and exterior (rust stains, grilles, vehicles, siding and sports equipment).

Promising results: “I was so disappointed when I scraped my pretty white sink with pots and pans. I thought I’d need to replace it or try to sand it down and redo it somehow. from another but i bought this thing as a last ditch effort to fix it takes a little elbow grease to get them out, the scratches don’t just rub off, but if you rub them for a few minutes, they melt pretty quickly. After two turns, my sink looks almost new again. It also worked on a few mineral stains in my tub that I thought were permanent after the gentle scrub failed to remove them. Again, a little of that stuff, the messy side of a blue sponge, a little effort and they were gone!” – Dan Borden

Mice often seek refuge in warm, enclosed spaces, such as your home. There are many things you can do to keep mice out of your home and protect your home from those pesky rodents. It turns out there are several smells that these pests can’t stand, which means you can use them to your advantage. From essential oils to common household items, many smells will send mice running the other way.

Once people find mice in their homes, it can be extremely difficult to completely get rid of the problem. Also, once they have built their hidden nesting area, it becomes increasingly difficult.

That’s why it’s best to take steps to prevent an infestation before it even happens.

So why do mice enter homes? Pest control experts from Sigma Pest control said, “One of the main reasons mice enter your home is to look for food. And one of the easiest places to find food is in a trash can that hasn’t been properly sealed.

“Make sure you keep your trash cans tightly closed at all times and don’t leave any bags or cans open. This will make it difficult for mice to get to food and prevent them from entering your home.

Fox Pest Control experts have shared natural scents that can be used around the house to keep mice out.

Peppermint Oil

Pest control pros say, “Peppermint oil is an effective method of keeping mice and rats away.

“These rodents can’t stand the robust, minty smell of this oil, so a few drops around your home can do a lot to keep them away for good.”

Homeowners can also use a diffuser to spread peppermint oil around their home or apply it directly to areas where they have seen mice. Just be sure to dilute the oil first, as undiluted peppermint oil can irritate your skin.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a well-known mosquito repellent, but it can also be used to repel mice.

Experts say: “These animals hate the lemony smell of lemongrass, so using it around your home can help deter them.”

You can buy citronella candles or oils or plant citronella seedlings around the house. These plants will not only help keep rodents away, but also make outdoor spaces more pleasant.

Bleach

In addition to natural odors, there are also chemical fragrances that repel these pests, including bleach.

Pest control gurus have said, “Bleach is a standard household product that can be used as a rodent repellent.

“The pungent smell of bleach is unpleasant to these animals, so using it around your home can help keep them away.

“You can mix it with water and spray it around your house, then monitor the area to see if the rodents are repelled after a few days.”

Be sure to use bleach safely, as it can be toxic if inhaled or ingested. Wear gloves and a mask when using this cleaner, so you don’t breathe in the fumes.

In addition to condensation, not turning on the heater also means that laundry can take longer than usual to dry, if a household does not have a dryer or does not want to use one. Having wet clothes lying around can also lead to mold. Luckily, Ms. Hinch fans have shared inexpensive and effective ways to prevent condensation and mold during the winter months.

Ms Hinch is a cleaning influencer with over four million followers on Instagram. She is so popular that cleaning enthusiasts have created Facebook pages in her honor.

On one such page, with over 100,000 members, a Ms. Hinch fan wanted to know if she should buy a dehumidifier to dry her washed clothes and prevent mildew.

Teigan Kemp wrote: “Hi, I’m currently using my spare bedroom to house the drying rack for my washed clothes as I refuse to turn on the heater to dry all the laundry I do.

“I’m looking to get a dehumidifier to prevent any mold for the king in the bedroom. Due to the obvious cost increase, I’m wondering if the pictured dehumidifiers are efficient or better to buy an electric one.”

Sharon Milnes recommended using this type of dehumidifier in the bedroom, saying, “I use these in my bedroom to keep condensation at bay and prevent mold. Worth the price. Try it and if it doesn’t work no, try other options.”

Tracey Clements commented: “Been using these for years now and they work great, usually from B&M.”

Sophie Rebecca Pattinson said: “These worked great in my old house, they were really effective and the condensation was pretty bad! Definitely worth trying first and seeing if it works for you.”

Tracy Louise Forbes wrote, “I put them next to my clothes when they dry and they’re fabulous. They also last a few weeks and that helps a lot. I’ve also put them in the windows as they hate condensation.”

Sue Sims Broady recommended: “These are good for small spaces, I’ve used them successfully in closets. I recently bought a dehumidifier with laundry function and it’s been a game changer.”

Anne McSherry shared, “You can buy a lot cheaper at book stores etc. But I swear by them.”

Rachel Spight said: “I use them all the time in my bathroom and they work great!! I’ve never had a problem with them, they last a good two months before I need to replace them.”

But other Ms Hinch fans have advised investing in an electric dehumidifier, instead of crystals.

Vicky Wilkinson recommended: “Get an electric one with a wash setting, these are better for window sills and general condensation.”

Sarah Bean said: “It would work, but an electric one would work faster to dry clothes and obviously wouldn’t need to be replaced.”

Carolyn Hamer wrote: “Certainly electric for drying clothes, but I find them handy on windowsills and areas where condensation is trapped.”

Nicola Loveridge added: “I’ve only used an electric one but I think they would fill up very quickly if you used them to dry clothes so I think you’d be better off in the long run with an electric one. . I don’t think they’re expensive to run.”

You may think your handy washing machine is self-cleaning, but the truth is, it needs regular deep cleaning. But I use hot water, scented detergent and fabric softener, you might think. No matter. Even the best washing machines need a little TLC from time to time; otherwise, all kinds of smelly debris (like soap scum, lint, and other grime) can build up in the washer drum and transfer to your clothes.

Luckily, cleaning a smelly washing machine and leaving it spotless is quite simple. Read on for everything you need to know about washing machine maintenance, how to clean them and when it’s time to do it.

Why clean your washing machine?

The dirt your machine removes from clothes, sheets, and towels has to go somewhere, which means dirt and bacteria can build up inside your washing machine over time. Without regular cleaning, top load washers and front load washers will harbor soap scum, hard water deposits and mildew. You might not notice it when you walk into your laundry room, but your clothes will come out of their wash cycle with a sticky film and an unpleasant odor.

What are the signs that your washing machine needs cleaning?

Your washing machine takes care of your clothes, so it’s normal for you to take care of them yourself. With that in mind, here are some of the telltale signs that your washer could benefit from a cleaning cycle.

The Washing machine has a foul odor.

If you notice a foul smell emanating from your washing machine, consider that a sign that cleaning is needed. Washing machines are in constant contact with germs and bacteria from dirty laundry, so it’s no surprise that less-than-favorable odors build up over time.

Your clothes come out impure.

In addition to unpleasant odors, stains left on clothes after a wash cycle are a clue that your washing machine needs a good cleaning. Unless you’re dealing with particularly stubborn stains like red wine or tomato sauce, your clothes should be spot-free after washing.

The rubber seal has black spots.

Does the rubber gasket around the lid of your top load washer have black spots? This is a clear sign that your top loader needs cleaning. In a humid environment, bacteria and mold accumulate and stick to the rubber gasket. Not only do these offenders ruin your clothes, but they are extremely unsanitary. Clean your washing machine as soon as you notice these black spots.

What’s the best way to clean a washing machine?

If your machine has a self-cleaning function, choose this cycle and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly clean the inside of the machine. Otherwise, follow this simple, three-step DIY process to remove buildup and ensure your laundry stays fresh and clean.

Step 1: Run a hot cycle with white vinegar.

Vinegar is a great eco-friendly alternative to harsh cleaning chemicals like bleach. To effectively clean your washing machine, run a regular empty cycle on its hottest water setting and the longest cycle using two cups of white vinegar instead of detergent. This hot water and vinegar cleaning solution removes bacteria from the wash tub and prevents the growth of new bacteria. It is also a powerful deodorizer that eliminates strong musty smells.

Step 2: Scrub the washing machine.

Mix a little vinegar with lukewarm water in a bucket. Use this mixture – plus a sponge or an old toothbrush – to clean the inside of the washing machine. Pay particular attention to the inside of the lid and the opening. If your detergent dispenser and fabric softener dispenser are removable, soak them in your vinegar solution before scrubbing. And don’t forget to wipe the outside of the appliance well!

Step 3: Run a Final Rinse Cycle.

Once you’ve scrubbed the washing machine and cleaned the filter, run another regular, vacuum, hot cycle, but this time with no vinegar added. If desired, add ½ cup baking soda for freshness. After the wash cycle is complete, wipe the inside of the tub with a clean cloth to remove any remaining residue.

Maintenance hacks?

Now that you have some helpful cleaning tips, let’s review care and maintenance tips to keep your washer and clothes clean and fresh.

Clean it regularly.

If you live in an area with hard water, a general rule is that you clean and sanitize your top-loading or front-loading washing machine every two to three months to prevent mineral deposits. That said, if you have heavily soiled clothes or live in a hot, humid area where mold is a problem, consider cleaning your washing machine monthly. This will help you maintain a high output top or front loader.

Leave the lip open.

After running a load, leave your washer lip open. This allows the basin, pipes, drum, agitator and seals to dry out and reduces the risk of bacteria, mold and mildew growth.

Don’t let your clothes sit.

We’ve all done it: we’ve forgotten that we put a load of laundry in the washing machine and let it sit for hours before putting it in the dryer. Unfortunately, leaving damp clothes in a warm, humid environment can breed smelly bacteria.

Never store laundry products on top of the washer.

Whatever you do, don’t store or place laundry products like detergent or washing machine cleaner on top of your washer. Why? Because accidents do happen, and if something spills on the finish or the electronic controls, damage is sure to follow.

Measure your laundry.

Use the right amount of detergent based on how dirty your clothes are and the hardness of your water. Using too much soapy water can actually make things worse because the water can’t rinse effectively. This results in soap residue on clothes and in the machine.

Check for rust.

Do you find small brown spots on your recently washed laundry? Rust could be to blame. Use a flashlight to check your washer basket for chips in the finish. You can either replace the washer basket or opt for a kit to repair and repaint the porcelain coating. Follow the instructions carefully and you may be able to enjoy your washing machine for a few more years.

Do not overload your machine.

The last tip on the list, but certainly not the least, is not to overfill your washing machine with very large loads of laundry. While this can be a tempting way to cut time, it can cause your washer to overwork, which will eventually trap and clog your hoses and drains.

The essential

Cleaning your washing machine may seem silly, but it’s important. Bacteria, mold, and mildew can build up quickly over time, leading to unpleasant odors that can transfer to clothes, towels, and linens. Additionally, the appliance may also contain leftover detergent and hard water deposits, which can leave a sticky residue on laundry.

To ensure your freshly laundered items are as clean as possible, follow the simple steps above to clean your washing machine every three months. If you live in a particularly humid area, you may want to consider cleaning your machine monthly, as bacteria thrive and grow rapidly in warm, humid environments. Regular cleanings can combat this.

And if you just can’t get your washing machine to smell good no matter how hard you try, contact a technician who can get to the bottom of your problems.

Luckily, a laundry expert from Persil has revealed the one ingredient you need to add to your laundry detergent to eliminate damp smells.

The expert told the Express that getting rid of damp smells on clothes is “simple”.

First, wash the garment with a pod or two of laundry detergent or a scoop of powder, ideally ones that target odors.

In addition to your usual detergent, laundry experts reveal that you should add a cup of white vinegar to the drum of your washing machine.

They explained, “Vinegar is a disinfectant that helps eliminate odors.”

“Also, you can add fabric softener, but it should be a ‘heavy’ version to help target odors and add a lovely scent to clothes.”

Contaminated water supplies pose a significant threat to human health. According to the World Health Organization, contaminated water is linked to various diseases, including cholera, diarrhea, dysentery and hepatitis A, among others. Drinking water sources are prone to contamination, and many people may not know if their water is safe to drink or what they need to do to be sure.

The Environmental Protection Agency notes that many labs or testing services provide sample containers to people interested in having their water tested. But that leaves the question of when to test the waters. The EPA indicates that certain conditions and activities may warrant testing the water for the presence of various things that can make individuals sick.

• Condition: recurrent gastrointestinal disease

• Recommended test: Coliform bacteria

• Condition: household plumbing contains lead

• Recommended test: Pit, lead, copper

Condition: Scaly residue, soaps do not lather

• Recommended test: Hardness

• Condition: water softener needed to treat hardness

• Recommended test: manganese, iron

• Condition: stained plumbing fixtures, laundry room

• Recommended test: Iron, copper, manganese

• Condition: foul taste or odor

• Recommended test: hydrogen sulphide, corrosion, metals

• State: cloudy, frothy or colored water

• Recommended test: color, detergents

• Condition: corrosion of pipes, plumbing

• Recommended test: Corrosion, pH, lead

• Condition: rapid wear of water treatment equipment

• Recommended test: pH, corrosion

• State: areas of intensive agriculture nearby

• Recommended test: Nitrate, pesticides, coliform bacteria

• Condition: smell of gasoline or fuel oil, near a gas station or buried fuel tanks

• Recommended test: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)

• Condition: salty taste and sea water, or heavily salted road nearby

• Recommended test: chloride, TDS, sodium

Various conditions can indicate a contaminated water supply. Individuals should not hesitate to have their water tested when such conditions arise.

A cleaning expert has revealed why you shouldn’t make your beds in the morning, warning of the disgusting impact it could have.

Ms D, known for her tips and tricks for keeping a clean home, shared the warning with her social media followers.

She stressed that it was important to let the beds “breathe” in the morning, before making them.

During the night, hot, damp sheets attract buds and dirt, which are then trapped inside the bedding when the beds are made in the morning.

Instead, she says, you should leave the covers on for a while after waking up.

Writing on Instagram, Ms D said: ‘It seems like a lot of people are getting up and making the bed straight away. It’s something you need to stop doing.

“Get out of bed, flip the duvet, and let your bed breathe.

“During the night, we not only sweat, but also shed skin, and it’s a magnet for dust mites and bedbugs.

“They like moist, moist places, and some people only let their bed breathe in the summer and think you don’t need to in the winter because of the cold.

“But that’s not true. With central heating on in the winter, it can attract dust mites/bed bugs as much as it does in the summer months.

“So by making your bed every morning you trap all that damp air and help the mites/bedbugs reproduce (sounds awful, but it’s true).”

She added: “I know it’s nice to see your bedroom clean and fresh and of course we lead busy lives which means it’s easy to make the bed before we go to work.

“But it will help a lot. If you don’t have an hour in the morning, leave it until you get home, and then make the bed…at least you know it’s been well ventilated .”
