I’m a cleaning whiz…my hack will remove big yellow stains from your pillows – they’ll come out sparkling like new

Since they are used daily, it is not surprising that most pillows are covered in large yellow stains.

But while it might be tempting to just throw them away and ditch the old pillow for a new one, there are simple cleaning tricks to banish this unsightly mess.

The best part? Not only are these tricks cheap, but they also work with and without a washing machine.

How to remove yellow stains from pillows in the washing machine

Chat with L’ExpressJoan Clark, cleaning expert at Advice bulletinshared a solution that uses white vinegar to remove yellow stains.

She said: “To whiten yellowed pillows, combine baking soda, vinegar, laundry detergent and dish detergent in a small container and stir.

“Place the pillow in the washing machine and add the cleaning solution as you normally would while washing.”

Since this cleaner is thick, be sure to follow up with a second wash cycle and use hot water only.

“This simple yet effective recipe is great for removing sweat stains from shirts or pillows.

”Easily remove yellow stains, then put pillows or other clothes in the dryer.

“Add a few tennis balls or dryer balls to the dryer as well.

”The balls fluff up the pillows while drying and provide even heating.

“Dry the pillow on the air cycle or low heat setting.

However, before trying this trick, read your pillow labels, as some are not suitable for the washing machine.

How to remove yellow stains from pillows without a washing machine

For those whose pillows must be hand washed, hand wash them with a mild detergent to remove yellow stains.

Joan advised, “To whiten pillows, fill a large tub with hot water and add a quarter cup of laundry detergent.

“To whiten heavily soiled yellow pillows, use a quarter cup of bleach or a quarter cup of Borax.

”Avoid using boiling water to avoid damaging the fibres.

Sharing her expertise, the prodigy said you should place the pillow in the soapy water and knead it with your hands to allow the detergent to work its way through the material.

When finished, remove the pillow and place it under cold running water to rinse away all soap residue and dirt.

The cleaning guru warned: “Do not wring the pillow to avoid damaging the microfibers.

“Gently squeeze the material to remove as much water as possible.

If the care label says not to dry your pillow in the dryer, let it dry outside and be sure to turn it over occasionally.

For pillows that are safe to machine dry, place them in the dryer on a low setting and add wool dryer balls or tennis balls to fluff them up.

If you don’t want to use bleach, Joan recommended an alternative: baking soda.

She said, “Use the vinegar-soaked brush to scrub the baking soda. Wipe off dirty residue with a damp cloth.

“You can also add the vinegar to a bottle sprayer and spray vinegar on clothes and baking soda.

“Let the chemicals fizz a bit and scrub with the toothbrush.

“Baking soda and vinegar are a dynamite combination that removes all kinds of stains from a multitude of surfaces.”

When it comes to caring for your pillows, the expert advised, “Make sure you wrap your pillows in a pillow protector as well as pillowcases.

“Change them once a week, as well as your bedding. If your pillows get particularly dirty from excessive sweating or other causes, change them twice a week.

She also added, “It is essential to clean machine washable pillows with bleach at least twice a year. Always use the gentle spin cycle and rinse cycle when washing pillows.

“Use dishwasher detergent or mild laundry detergent to clean delicate pillows as needed to avoid yellow pillows.”
