In his first playoffs since being promoted to Division 2A, East Surry finds himself in a situation similar to previous years.

The Cardinals host a state playoff third round game against Monroe on Friday. East Surry has reached the third round of the playoffs in each of the past five seasons.

East, the Foothills 2A Conference Champions, will face the Monroe High School Redhawks, the Rocky River 2A / 3A Conference Champions.

East Surry and Monroe have only faced each other three times. These meetings have all taken place in the 1AA State Playoffs and have taken place in consecutive seasons. The Redhawks are 3-0 against the Cardinals.

The first meeting came in the first round of the 2010 playoffs, which Monroe won 34-27. The two teams met again in the first round in 2011, and the Redhawks won 50-6. Finally, Monroe and East Surry met in the Sweet 16 of the 2012 playoffs. Monroe won this game 53-0 and was second in the Western Region.

Friday’s game will be the first game between the two teams to take place at Pilot Mountain.
